Without intervention, babies born with transposed great arteries (TGA) are doomed to a rapid death. Jatene and coworkers deserve the credit for performing the first successful arterial switch operation (ASO) in a patient with TGA and ventricular septal defect (VSD) in 1975. Since then ASO has become the procedure of choice in most medical centers. This review article summarizes the historical aspects of arterial switch operation and assesses this procedures outcomes.
